A Rich History
West Dallas has a rich history dating back to the 1830s when French settlers first established a community in the area. The settlement, known as La Reunion, was founded by a group of “socialist utopians” who sought to establish a new society based on “equality and cooperation”. The settlers built homes, farms, and businesses in the area, and established a communal way of life that reflected their ideals. The settlement was short-lived and ultimately a failure.

Starting in the early 1900s, one of the most significant aspects of West Dallas’ history is its long-standing reputation as a thriving center of African American entrepreneurship and culture. In the 1920s and 1930s, the neighborhood was home to numerous black-owned businesses, including restaurants, nightclubs, and retail stores.

Today, West Dallas is a thriving neighborhood, with a unique blend of old and new, tradition and innovation, and community spirit and entrepreneurial energy. From its vibrant arts scene to its thriving food culture, from its historic landmarks to its modern amenities, West Dallas is a place that celebrates its past while embracing the future.Â
